2026 Alumni Hall of Fame Spotlight | Hunter Goodman

Hunter Goodman currently serves as the Assistant Resident Engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Northern Neck Residency. In this role, he oversees the development of The Northern Neck’s 10 Million dollar budget from several funding sources related to maintenance, pavement, and County Safety Operational Improvement Funds (CSOI). The Residency managed budgets are used for highway maintenance and projects developed to meet local needs for road safety improvements. Hunter earned his Bachelor’s Degree in General Engineering from James Madison University.

While at JMU, he completed a two-year capstone project focused on the design and construction of a stream restoration project on Beaver Creek in Dayton, Virginia. Working with five fellow students and Trout Unlimited, the team surveyed, designed, and ultimately constructed the restoration project. The team secured funding through Trout Unlimited’s Embrace a Stream Grant and community donations. They also conducted educational outreach events with local elementary and middle school students. Their project received multiple awards at JMU’s X’change design showcase, including the Environmental Impact Award in 2021 and 2022 and Overall Best Project Award in 2022.

Hunter began his VDOT career through the Engineering Scholar internship program before entering VDOT’s Engineering Development Growth Experience (EDGE) program. As part of EDGE, he gained experience across numerous areas of VDOT, including design, materials, construction, structures, maintenance, environmental services, transportation planning, and traffic engineering. Following the EDGE program, Hunter became a Land Use Permit Manager at VDOT’s Ashland Residency, where he supervised five construction inspectors. During his tenure, he modernized the office’s record-keeping system by transitioning it from paper to electronic records while serving in one of the busiest Land Development offices in the state. He also earned his Professional Engineer license earlier this year after passing the PE examination back in 2024.

Hunter’s career reflects a commitment to engineering, leadership, public service, and continuous professional development. From designing environmental restoration projects as a student to leading transportation maintenance operations, he continues to apply his engineering experience to serve the Commonwealth of Virginia.
